Tips for Your First Game as DM
1. Hold a Session Zero:
Talk about what kind of story everyone wants, set ground rules, and help players create characters together. Consider using the 3 main pillars of D&D to gain a deeper understanding of what your new party is looking. (Those are listed below)
2. Start Simple:
Use a pre-written adventure or keep your first story straightforward. Focus on fun over complexity.
3. Be Flexible:
Players will surprise you. Go with the flow and don’t worry about sticking to the script. Plan for options rather than outcomes.
4. Use Tools and Resources:
Digital tools, campaign apps, and online guides can make your job easier.
5. Keep Communication Open:
Check in with your players after each session to see what’s working and what could be improved.
Main Play Pillars
Roleplaying (Social Interaction):
Bring your character to life by interacting with other players, non-player characters, and the world itself. Whether you’re negotiating with a merchant, making allies, or uncovering secrets, roleplaying is where your choices and personality shine.
Exploration:
Discover new locations, solve mysteries, and interact with the environment. Exploration is about searching for hidden treasures, navigating dangerous terrain, and learning about the world your group is building together.
Combat:
Face off against monsters, villains, and other threats in tactical battles. Combat is where teamwork, strategy, and a little luck with the dice come together to overcome challenges and protect your party.
*problem-solving or puzzles can also be a key part of the D&D experience.
