Steps for Creating Your First Character

1. Pick a Species and Class:

Start with something simple. Human Fighters, Elf Rangers, or Dwarf Clerics are classics for a reason. Check out our D&D class quiz to see what class might be best for you!

2. Decide on a Backstory:

Give your character a simple motivation. Why are they adventuring? What do they want? Something short and sweet to start is fine. You can always add on to your backstory as you play and get to know your character better.

3. Fill Out a Character Sheet:

Use online tools like D&D Beyond or printable sheets. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every box, ask your DM or group for help.

4. Learn the Basic Rules:

Focus on how to roll for attacks, skill checks, and saving throws. You’ll learn more as you play.

5. Embrace Mistakes:

Your first character doesn’t have to be perfect and won't ever be. Flaws are just as important as strengths in the game. They help add depth to your character and make the game feel more real. The fun is in the journey and the story you create together.
